Everyone is talking about the latest trend: the mahjong club. The popularity of mahjong is taking us to new places, y’all.

Mahjong clubs have been called lots of different things- mahjong lounges, social clubs, mahjong parlors and more. These clubs all offer different ways to experience the game and connect.

Missy Mahjong was the first to introduce the mahjong social club. There are no fees, no minimum spend, no experience requirement to attend. These clubs are designed to connect players and provide community in some of the most exciting spaces all over Nashville. Watch the feature on Channel 2 in Nashville here.

The physical Nashville mahjong clubs

The new brick and mortar mahjong clubs all seem to have their own twist, whether they are for lessons, open play, auto tables, or leagues. Some are private and some offer public drop in availability.

I am a member of two private clubs that offer mahjong programming and so much more. I like to play mahjong, but personally I am looking for more connection. Because I cannot name the clubs or use photos of the inside, you will just have to use your imagination using the exterior photos. There is also a new mahjong club open just south of Nashville in the Brentwood suburbs.

This is similar to the private mahjong club in Nashville. We are not allowed to take photos or post about events, but you get the idea from this post.

Wedgewood Houston:

The details: This private club offers mahjong programming, a pool, a restaurant, screening room, gym and more. There is an application process, initiation fee and yearly fee. This club is open 7 days a week, from breakfast through late night drinks.

How I use the mahjong club: There is mahjong programming, but I generally like to bring my own set and find a table to play at my own convenience. Each day I am allowed to bring in up to three guests, provided they check in and I tell them about club rules, including no photos, social media or laptops. I also meet lots of other members that play, so sometimes I come with my mahj bag and see who joins me.

Germantown:

The details: I call this spot my creative club. There is regular mahjong programming and I can bring a few guests at no additional fee for a game. The space is beautiful and cheery, but doesn’t offer anything “extra” for food or beverages. To join, you must be nominated by a current member, go through the application process and pay the initiation and yearly fee. The club is only open 10am to 4pm, with special programming on nights and weekends. No photos or social media posting allowed.

How I use the mahjong club: I attend the mahjong games and bring friends for play occasionally. I use the sets from The Mahjong Line and the cards from Marvelous Mah Jongg provided by the club. This is also my book club, stitch club and co working space. I also attend the special programming for tablescape design, cooking classes and other creative classes.

Brentwood:

The details: This is Music City’s newest mahjong club, opening summer 2026. There are unlimited play memberships for $2000/ year, drop in classes for $15/ session and lessons for $150/ session. Everything is provided for play, but I am unsure of the food and beverage availability. One rumor I have heard is that the photos online are fake and the room is just plain with game tables and folding chairs. I have not confirmed this personally.

How to use this Brentwood mahjong club: I can’t justify the fee for the yearly membership unless you want to play mahjong a lot. Like a lot of mahjong. It is unclear if this club offers any additional amenities. I will probably go check it out for the $15/ session play. I know it takes a lot of work to coordinate games and book people, so $15 without any frills is reasonable for me. It’s a mahjong friend finder!

My thoughts on mahjong clubs

I love the idea of mahjong clubs, but the exclusion and private nature of most clubs gives me pause.

I am a member of the mahjong clubs that offer more that just mahjong and allow me to bring friends.

The drop in club in Brentwood appeals to me, as I am happy to pay to play in a beautiful space on borrowed tiles and let them find the other players. I don’t want to plan the mahjong events- I just want to play.
